“ISO 45001 is one of the most significant developments in workplace safety over the past 50 years, presenting an opportunity to move the needle on reducing occupational safety and health risks,” said Vic Toy, U.S. technical advisory group (TAG) chair, in a statement. “The goal was to create a widely accepted standard that can produce a highly effective safety and health management system for an increasingly interconnected world, regardless of an organization’s size, location, supply chains or nature of work. It becomes a minimum standard of practice, and a good one at that.” EXCERPT OF AN ARTICLE BY https://www.ehstoday.com/standards/article/21919482/iso-45001-globally-aligns-workplace-safety-efforts
While this is an older article, it is still very relevant, as the ISO 45001 is still new. The ISO 45001 Standard was officially released for compliance in March of 2018. Companies and organizations who have been OHSAS 18001 certified have just three years to comply with the ISO 45001 Standard in order to maintain their certified status.
There are many businesses that do not have a global or multinational presence, but just as many businesses do have customers and clients in other countries. The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is essentially extending the principle of GHS for chemicals to the realm of occupational health and safety. This is a unification of the expectation for safe workplaces, care of the environment, and consideration of the community by developing effective Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
The ISO 45001 Standard provides for simple integration of the ISO 14001 Environmental and ISO 9001 Quality Standards.
If you want to be on the cutting edge of occupational health and safety, the ISO 45001 Standard should not be overlooked.
